The Best Wood Chips and Charcoal Combos for Perfectly Steaks

September 24, 2024 by bbqpros

best-grilling-wood

Grilling the perfect steak is an art, but what truly sets apart a master griller from the rest is the fuel you use. The combination of best grilling wood chips and charcoal affects the flavor, texture, and finish of your meat. To achieve grilling perfection in Toronto’s grilling season, you need to know which pairings work best.

Hickory and Lump Charcoal: A Classic Combo for Bold Flavor

Hickory wood chips and lump charcoal create a robust, smoky flavor that enhances beefy cuts like ribeye or T-bone steaks. Hickory provides a deep, hearty smokiness, while lump charcoal burns hotter and cleaner than briquettes, giving you precise control over the sear. This combination is perfect for those who enjoy a rich, smoky taste that complements the steak’s natural flavor. What are some of the other best grilling wood chip options?

Mesquite and Charcoal Briquettes: Intense Heat, Intense Flavor

Mesquite wood chips are well-known for their powerful, earthy flavor, making them the top choice for those who crave an intense grilling experience. When using mesquite wood chips, it’s important to consider their potent nature and how they pair with other grilling elements.

Mesquite wood chips are best paired with charcoal briquettes, as they burn consistently and provide a steady base of heat for grilling. The combination of mesquite wood chips and charcoal briquettes is particularly well-suited for quickly grilling steaks over high heat, enhancing the overall flavor profile of the meat.

A Robust Flavor

Due to mesquite’s robust and punchy flavor, it’s important to use it judiciously, especially when grilling steaks. For optimal results, mesquite wood chips are best suited for shorter cooking times, particularly when grilling steaks such as flank or skirt. This approach allows the mesquite flavor to impart its characteristic smokiness without overwhelming the meat.

By following these guidelines, you can harness the full potential of mesquite wood chips to elevate your grilling experience and savor the intense, earthy flavors they impart to your favorite cuts of steak.

Applewood and Coconut Charcoal: A Sweet, Subtle Smoke

If you’re looking for a milder, slightly sweet flavor, applewood chips paired with coconut charcoal is an excellent choice. This combination provides a lighter, fruitier smoke that complements leaner cuts like sirloin or filet mignon.

Coconut charcoal burns efficiently and at a stable temperature, making it perfect for low-and-slow cooking, allowing the applewood flavor to gently infuse the meat.

The perfect pairing of wood chips and charcoal is essential for achieving the ideal flavor and texture for your grilled steaks. Whether you prefer a bold, smoky taste, an intense grilling experience, or a milder, sweet flavor profile, choosing the right combination can make all the difference.

Master the art of grilling with the perfect fuel pairings and make this grilling season in Toronto truly unforgettable. If you want to elevate your grilling game contact BBQ Pros today for all your grilling needs.

Tips for the Perfect Summer Grill

Use the Right Tools

Good tools make grilling easier and more enjoyable. Invest in a quality grill brush, tongs, and a meat thermometer. These tools help ensure your food is cooked perfectly and your grill stays clean.

Preheat the Grill

Always preheat your grill before adding food. This ensures even cooking and helps prevent sticking. Aim for a medium-high heat for most grilling tasks.

Oil the Grates

Prevent food from sticking by oiling the grates before cooking. Use a paper towel dipped in oil and tongs to apply a thin layer of oil to the hot grates.

Let Meat Rest

After grilling, let meat rest for a few minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in more flavorful and tender meat.

Grilling is a delightful way to enjoy summer with family and friends. Whether you’re a meat lover or prefer vegetables, these recipes and tips will help you create delicious meals. Fire up your grill, enjoy the outdoors, and savor the flavors of summer!

Grilling Tips

Before starting out, remember to use the usual precautions you would use when grilling out in the summer.

  • Be aware of the heat fire to avoid burns
  • Cook over the indirect heat for most dishes
  • Use multiple burners to your advantage
  • Always check the temperature of the grill
  • Don’t cook in a windy spot
  • Save the drippings in a shallow pan for gravy
  • Keep the grill at 350 F (About 175 C)
  • Add extra flavor with cherry, hickory, or apple chips for a charcoal grill
  • If you stuff the bird, add cooking time

Charcoal Grill

Can you cook Thanksgiving with a charcoal grill? Absolutely! Start by lighting the coals. Once they have turned gray push them to the side of the grill, creating a large circle. You can play any Thanksgiving dish in the middle. Adjust the temperature accordingly. You can add more coals or simply adjust vents.

How to Grill a Turkey

You might want to start small with just a few dishes grilled, but why not try grilling your turkey? If you have the time, you might want to try a test bird before your big Thanksgiving day. Give your grill a professional tune-up first. Reserve a weekend to follow the recipe, especially if you don’t grill often. The dress rehearsal is well worth it.

Don’t use direct heat for your turkey. You will end up with a burnt possibly undercooked turkey. Instead, preheat your grill for fifteen minutes. Make sure the grill is very hot. If you have multiple burners, turn off the middle burner. Use a grill thermometer to keep an eye on the bird.

Oil the bird well. Season the turkey inside and out with seasonings, salt, and pepper. Remember that stuffing the bird will add extra cooking time. Place the turkey breast side up on a roasting pan on the grill. Expect to grill for a few hours. The internal thigh temperature should be 180 F (85 C). After the bird is cooked, let it stand for fifteen minutes. Carve the bird.

You will have to carefully time your Thanksgiving dinner if you want to grill the bird and other side dishes. Enjoy a delectable feast with your family and friends this holiday season!
